Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • Your computer (PC, Laptop, Netbook, Thin Client, etc) must have USB ports and support "booting" from a USB device!
    • Most computers manufactured after approximately 1998 support booting from USB -- check your hardware documentation!
      • In many BIOS versions, you will need to go to the "advanced BIOS settings" menu and look for the "1st boot device" choice or something similar.
      • Often, you then need to choose "Boot from USB-HDD", "Boot from removable disk", or in a few instances "Boot from USB-ZIP", or "Boot from USB-FDD". Once the correct choice is made, you would save the entry, exit your BIOS, and Reboot. If done properly, your computer should restart and permit you to "Boot" from RescueMeUSB™ and present you with the RescueMeUSB menu.
      • You may need to "Flash" your BIOS to a later version if using an older PC. Check your hardware documentation.

    • RescueMeUSB™ will load whether your machine has USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 ports. However, USB 2.0 compliant ports will have significantly faster initial load times over ports that are only USB 1.1 compliant.
      • Most of the operating systems and tools on RescueMeUSB™ run from within the computer's RAM (memory) once they are loaded; so, once they finish loading (or "booting") they will have the same quick performance, regardless of which type of USB port you have!
      • A more thorough explanation and comparison of USB speeds to other devices is here.

  • Though some of the Operating Systems on the RescueMeUSB can work with as little as 64MB of RAM, we highly recommend the following memory minimums to fully take advantage of its capabilities. For example:
    • GOOD: 128MB RAM
      • Runs Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, Finnix, FreeDOS "base" version, minimal Debian (including RescueMeUSB "Debian" edition), DBAN, MemTest86+
      • Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux are great for running a fully functional operating system on a PC or laptop with low memory so that you can: browse the web, listen to music, watch videos, use a word processor, access network shares, etc.
    • BETTER: 256 MB RAM
      • Runs the above as well as Ubuntu, Knoppix, and Debian with gui
      • Runs Parted Magic
      • Finnix will load completely into RAM for optimal performance
      • Runs FreeDOS "full" version
    • BEST: At least 512 MB RAM
      • Runs all of the above
      • Best for running fully functional, optimal performance, Ubuntu and Knoppix ...
        • To do web browsing while simultaneously using OpenOffice.org® for Word Processing, Presentation, and Spreadsheet, for example
        • To recover data from an Encrypted LVM RAID volume
        • To watch TV on TV tuner card
      • Best for running Debian as ...
        • A Samba multimedia server with your content on multiple external Encrypted hard drives
      • Best for running Ubuntu or Debian as ...
        • a VOIP Proxy server
        • or as an Asterisk PBX server
        • or as an Email/SPAM filtering appliance
